Smart start

(Friday, June 19th 2009)

This morning the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory kicked off with some general advice from Rutger and Lech (“You’re not here to prove that you are a filmmaker. You’re not here to prove that you have the talent to direct an Oscar-winning short. We KNOW that already. And please, try not to be too serious.”).

A lot of questions were also answered, including  “What’s the worst that could happen?” (“Swine flu”, deadpanned Lech Majewski.
The participants are not here to talk, but to make movies. That’s why they immediately got their first assignment: to write and shoot a 1 minute commercial for the Smart car... in just one day.

Erik-Jan Teunissen, general manager of Smart Holland, said that because the Smart is not a traditional car, a platform like YouTube is perfect for their message.  He then provided each team with one of  5 unique selling points, which will be the message of their first Filmfactory productions. The results will be premiering tomorrow evening.
