RICHARD VAN OOSTERHOUT
cinematography coach

After studying interior design, photography and film for a short period, Richard van Oosterhout immediately began working as a production designer, key-grip, focus puller and finally as a cinematographer. As a DoP he has a pronounced cinematographic style which shows great respect for acting. Without overdoing the aesthetics, he can transform the ordinary into the unique, without being artificial or arrogant. One could say he is more interested in searching for 'truth' rather than 'beauty'; and in this search for truth, beauty comes as a natural consequence. He is most influenced by the thoughts of Robert Bresson and the works of Michelangelo Antonioni.

His breakthrough came in 1998 with the award-winning Rosie, directed by Patrice Toye. Amongst others he has shot films such as Nowhere Man (Venice Days '08), Wolfsbergen (Forum Berlinale '07), Guernsey (Director's Fortnight Cannes '05). He has also shot TV-fiction such as Madam Minister and Waltz ( both top ten fiction Cologne-D). Richard van Oosterhout is a board member of the NSC (Netherlands Society of Cinematographers) and the EFA (European Film Academy) and has his own production company called ROMA FILM.
